Places to Live Horse Farms
Horse Farms in NC Horse Farms in NC

Sandy soil and a temperate year round climate have lured equestrians to the Sandhills for over a century. While Southern Pines is home to a majority of the horse farms, you don’t have to go far anywhere in Moore County before you see fencing and horses grazing in a pasture. The fox hunters and hunter/ jumpers were among the first enthusiasts to enjoy the Sandhills. Horseracing, polo, and harness racing have long been popular as well. In the past 20 years, the community has expanded dramatically to include eventing, dressage and carriage driving.

The 4,000 acre Walthour Moss Foundation with riding trails available to riders from around the region as well as the Moore County Hounds, forms the heart of the Southern Pines horse farm community. Youngs Road and Lake Bay Road border the Foundation and are densely populated with horses and farms. The Carolina Horse Park in nearby Hoke County hosts many competitions on a year-round basis for the thriving horse community.
