The Pines - Old Town, Pinehurst

LOCATION
In Moore County’s scenic Sandhills Region, the world-renowned golfing resorts of Pinehurst and Southern Pines offer championship golf courses designed by Ross, Maples, Palmer, Nicklaus, Jones and Fazio. The area also hosts an active horse community with one of North Carolina’s oldest foxhunts. The property enjoys a premier location in Old Town Pinehurst, and is a short walk from the village shops, hotel and country club. The Village was designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, known for the landscaping of New York’s Central Park and the Biltmore House grounds in Asheville, North Carolina.

RESIDENCE
The Pines, built in 1928, and designed by architect C.A. Platt of New York, is built in the tradition of the great country estates popular in the 1920's. The stately Georgian architecture exhibits Platt's characteristic grace in scale, balance and proportion. The curved drive to the entry and use of abbreviated pergolas with brackets on the facade additionally signify the period and his signature touch. The recently restored residence encompasses 6,291 square feet and offers six bedrooms, five full baths and two powder rooms. A handsome brick walled perimeter encloses Pinehurst's most beautifully landscaped gardens on 1.416 acres. The historic residence also features a three car garage with newly updated guest quarters, a delightful walled herb garden near the kitchen entrance, and a large, privately sited swimming pool near the back terrace.

The interior living spaces glow with a perfect rendering of the finest architecture of the 20th century. The grand entry hall is framed by a sweeping staircase, and opens to a magnificent living room that in turn opens through French doors to the gardens and terrace. There are fireplaces in the living, dining and garden rooms and oak hardwood flooring. The garden room features stone flooring. A study located off the entry hall is lined with bookshelves for a quiet retreat. Within the entry alcove is an elevator that opens to the second floor landing and sitting area.
The light filled formal dining room has exquisite millwork evident in the lovely built-in matching corner cabinets with carved shell detail, the mantle and ceiling moldings. Expansive French doors open to the terrace and gardens. A spacious butler's pantry with extra dishwasher and warming oven services the dining area and connects to a newly remodeled kitchen. The gourmet kitchen features new appliances and countertops, generous storage, and heart pine flooring.
The second story master suite, secluded on the southern wing, encompasses a large bedroom overlooking the front yard, a period dressing room with a small multitude of built-in drawers, cabinets, and closets, two new bathrooms that both share a large corner shower, and a sitting room/bedroom overlooking the back gardens. Four additional bedrooms and three baths across the landing separating the wings complete the upstairs. Characteristic of the time, a huge attic with cedar closet spans the house for storage and a handy basement, clean and well lighted with windows is accessible from the outside or within. The traditional back stairway connects the bedrooms with the kitchen area.
